DIARY OF THE MOVE

Y'all, I know..it's been too long.  Sorry for the lack of posts, but it's been wild.  Moving is absolutely exhausting and to top it off, it got a bit of a cold the first day in.  I really wasn't that surprised I got sick.  I wasn't treating myself right.  I was traveling a ton, skipped workouts, skimped on sleep and was eating out almost every meal.  Hindsight is 20/20.

May 1 - Mom, Dad, and I hopped in the Expedition EL which somehow fit all most of all of my belongings.  We drove for 10 hours straight, lost an hour somewhere around Knoxville, and got into DC around 7:00 PM.  We checked into the hotel and immediately headed out to walk to my apartment.  Lost on the first block.  Oh well--I wasn't a resident yet, so there was no shame in using Google to get us un-lost.  Got to the apartment and the building manager had moved ALL of my packages (mattress, box spring, tv, etc.) into my apartment and I was ecstatic.  Phil FTW!  He was promptly tipped.  Got back to hotel, noticed I was getting sick, crashed.

May 2 - Met the movers at my apt around 9:00 AM and they were done within 30 minutes.  Fail.  My parents and I could have easily moved my stuff, but I guess it was good since I was fully sick at this point.  We started arranging things, surveyed the place, organized the stuff, and wrote a lot of lists.  About an hour after the movers left, we headed out to Target and Bed, Bath, & Beyond.  That was an experience.  After dropping an obscene amount of cash, I was set.  Got back to the apt, dropped of the rental, and went back to the hotel to get ready for dinner.  Dinner.  Omg.  So good.  We went to Filomena in DC and it was amaze.  Just go.  Got back to the hotel and crashed even harder.

May 3 - Super sick.  Yuck.  And we had decided not to buy Kleenex at Target because the carts were already full.  Yes, carts.  After checking out of the first hotel, we set-off for the Hay-Adams.  Wow.  I felt like I was a senator or the First Lady or something like that.  The hotel was beautiful-thanks, Mom.  When we arrived, our room wasn't ready, so we set out for some sight-seeing.  My parents hadn't been to DC for at least 20 years, so it was necessary.  White House, Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial, Vietnam Memorial, back to hotel.  Classic.  We got back to the Hay-Adams and got ready for the evening.  We had a drink at Off the Record which is the bar at the hotel.  It really reminded me of the Coq D'or at the Drake in Chicago.  We then walked to the W so I could show my parents my favorite bar in DC, P.O.V.  Rooftop with great views and a really fun atmosphere.  I could have stayed there all night.  Then we headed to dinner at Founding Farmers.  I had heard really good things and while it was good, it wasn't great.  I would go back and give it another try, though.  My bestie, Kri, met us at dinner which was really fun.  Great day, but still sick.

May 4 - Breakfast at the Hay-Adams.  Prettiest breakfast I'll have in DC.  Also, the most expensive.  Got to the apartment and the property manager came over to mount the tv and help with a few other things.  He will be getting another call soon though..he has his own list.  Dad left at 11:00 AM :( It was very sad when he left, but while I was walking him out to catch his Uber, I was able to meet the building dog-walker, Sylvia.  I pray and pray that Sylvia will work wonders for Mollie.  She walks the dogs for a few hours everyday and Lord knows that Mollie needs to be socialized.  Sylvia also offers overnight dog-sitting.  Hallelujah.  Mom and I went back to the hotel to soak in it's beauty one last time and came back to the apt.  We worked the rest of the day.  We didn't stop until 7:00 PM.  Had some leftovers and continued working.  My apt wasn't bad to begin with, but it wasn't properly cleaned.  The property management company claimed they had it cleaned, but there's no way.  Luckily, my mom is really super good and making a place spick-and-span, so while I helped a little, she really made it perfect.  First night at the apt and first night on the Casper.  Very comfy, but still sick.

May 5 - Woke up and almost immediately I received a call from both West Elm and IKEA.  My orders were being delivered!  Sofa was in first-adorable.  Dresser came in second--not assembled.  Assembly was not adorable.  It took two hours and by the end of it, I was done.  Mom and I got ready and headed off to Georgetown.  Sigh.  I was home.  We stopped first at Paolo's for some carbs and then shopped for a few hours.  Sweet Mom treated me to a first-day-of-work outfit, so I'd feel extra professional.  Hopefully I'll shoot a styled post for the outfit--it's super cute.  We stopped at Georgetown Cupcakes and made a stop at Dean & Deluca so I could pretend grocery shop.  We got home early and went to bed early.  Getting better.

May 6 - Woke up and was feeling a tad better.  Mom and I went to the neighborhood hardware and home goods store and it was the cutest.  We came back dropped off the goods and headed out to the grocery.  I thought I had bought out the Safeway, but after getting home and stocking the fridge, it was still so pathetic looking.  Champagne, cheese, & chocolate.  That's pretty much it.  We worked and worked until we couldn't work no more.  Or more like 2:00 PM.  We freshened up and went out to get lunch and walk around.  We were able to stop in to this cute little market to pick up some wine.  Necessary.  And the first wine I saw was my fave rose..yay!  We then came home to unload the bottles.  After about an hour, we went out for pedis-my treat for Mother's Day.  We tried the Nail Saloon which was really relaxing.  You can tell they're a new business and they're definitely a little over-priced, but it was still fun.  We then walked home and made a stop at Whole Foods to pick-up another necessity: flowers.  $60 later (ugh) and I had the perfect mix of peonies, ranunculus, and tulips.  We brought them home and it really made the place feel much more inviting.  We had about 15 minutes and then we were off to Barmini by Jose Andres.  It was so cute.  I had been there once before with my friend, Courtney, so I knew it was going to be good and knew my mom would have fun.  We had a few snacks there, so dinner wasn't needed.  We came home, hung a few pictures, and went to bed.  Feeling about 80% better.

May 7 - Woke up and got ready for a little adventure.  The metro.  I had dabbled with the public transportation before, but I wanted to get comfortable with the metro route to work before the actual start date, so Mom agreed to try it out with me.  Red line to Glenmont, Silver to Largo.  We then walked to the bank, but had to immediately turn around to take the Orange line to Vienna and then the Red to Shady Grove (I think I've got it :), so that Mom could catch an Uber to DCA.  She was off before I knew it.  I walked back up to my apartment, teared up a little from a mix of sadness because I miss my family, a dose of scared feeling because I have no idea what I'm doing here and how I'm going to afford anything, and a slight pinch of anxiety.  I also think I'm having withdrawals from my dog.  She would really make it feel like home, but I won't see her for another 2 weeks and I'm not sure how I'm going to go that long.  Don't get me wrong-I'm also really excited.  I worked really hard to get here, was accepted into school, saved up, made plans, got a job, etc., but now it's all real and that's a little scary.  Luckily, I know I have a family that will support me even if I fail miserably, so that's definitely comforting.  I also have blogging which, right now, is the only thing that has stayed the same.  Feeling about 90% and getting ready for the weekend.  I also intend to sleep in tomorrow until whenever I wake up.  Sleep does the body good.

Whew.  Thanks for sticking with me..it was a long one; and stay tuned for a post on my place.  I only have a few more updates (insert bar cart) and then it will be ready to show :)
