FRIDAY READS

I'm off to Roanoke tonight to celebrate a good friend's bday.  I'm excited for the quick little road trip and the chance to catch up with some Nashville peeps.  I'll be back Tuesday, because..life.

Reads:

I want this yesterday.

Umm, VW..not okay.

The Pope's sched.  As cool as it is that he was in D.C. this past week, it royally religiously screwed up commutes.  However, since he was here, we're all forgiven for any swear words that were used.

Love this look on Grace. Ahh fall.

BLACK VEST

vest \\ tank \\ jeans (similar) \\ sandals (similar) \\ earrings

This has to be one of my favorite transitional outfits.  It's all black, it's a tad fashion forward with the vest piece, and it's so incredibly comfortable.  Yes, yes, and yes.

LET'S GET REAL

Let's get real.  Momma's put on a few lbs since the move in May and it's not a good look.  I won't go into the dirty details, but let's just say a coworker made a comment to me that I had never heard before and it really got my attention.  It stopped me in my pasta-eating tracks.  In the words of the fabulous Regina George, "I want to lose three pounds."  I have all the excuses in the world why I got to this place:  my new workplace doesn't have a gym (whine), all I like to do are spin classes and they're expensive (whine), I'm going out more (read: drinking) to make friends (whine).  Eww I'm totally that person making excuses.  This is also new to me; except for those couple years in college, I've typically been able to maintain my normal body weight.  I've never felt uncomfortable in my own skin, but that has changed.  My face doesn't just look bigger in pictures, it actually feels bigger.  It's a very odd feeling.  My clothes don't feel quite like they used to and I'm in no position to be buying any more clothes, so something has to change.

Nothing drastic, but I'm going to be a lot more conscious about what's going into my body as well as my activity levels.  I'm going to bring running shoes (most days) to work in order to walk during lunch, I'm going to take the stairs at the metro (downstairs only--let's not get crazy), and I'm going to stop snacking all day long.  Good, healthy breakfast, light lunch, then an even lighter dinner.  Those who know me well, know my love for Annie's mac and cheese..well, ladies..that's a changing.  Only one night a week am I going to allow myself that pleasure.  Yes, it was more than once a week prior-this is how I got myself into this mess.  I'm also going to cut out wine with dinner..at home.  As much as I want to be Olivia Pope and even if I just eat popcorn with the wine like she does, those cals will still end up somewhere around my mid-section or cheeks..face cheeks..I wish it was the other cheeks.

This may end up being harder than I'm planing on because fall allows you to hide behind those sweater wraps and capes, so in a couple months, if you still see my legs getting wider and face getting puffier, please call me out..we all need some accountability.

Disclaimer - I do not at all think I am overweight and do not dislike my body; I am solely just feeling uncomfortable and out of (my usual) shape.  I also do not know anything about nutrition or dieting or anything like that, so please take what I say with a grain of salt.  It's obviously not an actual weight-loss plan.

FRIDAY FAVE: FARFETCH

So, remember on Monday when I complained about bloggers being paid advertisers?  Well, don't fret.  This isn't a paid promotion.  I just absolutely am obsessed with this online boutique.

'Farfetch is a global community of over 300 visionary fashion boutiques offering an inspirational shopping experience to fashion-forward consumers.

The independent boutiques within their community have been carefully selected for their forward-thinking attitude, unique approach to merchandising and diversity of brands. They are located everywhere from Paris, New York and Milan to Bucharest, Riyadh and Seattle, but united in one e-commerce website. When you order through Farfetch, your order is delivered directly from the boutique to your door.'

It's a very unique concept because shoppers get access to boutiques all across the world.  Love that.  All the pieces are truly unique and you can even sometimes find an awesome deal.  Definitely make sure to check out Farfetch the next time you're in the need for something special.

TRANSITION

dress // shoes (similar) // bag // necklace (similar) // watch

It's about that time.  Crisp breeze in the morning, hot coffee, cashmere..I am so ready it's not even funny.  This dress is the perfect transition piece as the fabric is quite thick and the length is a bit past the knees.

WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT

Recently, I had been in a huge blogging-rut.  I wasn't motivated, I wasn't getting the usual amount of opportunity emails & recognition, I wasn't earning as much, etc. and I was feeling down about it.  There was a lot to do with it, but I think a lot of it was because I had been so busy lately with traveling, school, and work related stuff that I hadn't been putting in as much time, so the output wasn't as good.  In addition to that, the transition from Nashville to DC was super hard.  I had a good friend as my photographer and her rates were super reasonable and as much as I love the girls I've been working with in DC, the rates are way, way more (duh..everything is in DC), so I can't shoot as many outfits..which is my fave thing to feature.  I also feel like the blogging community (not in DC or Nashville specifically, just all over) sort of turned into a huge advertisement/commercial.  It all seemed so fake (still does).  You'll scroll through Bloglovin and 10 bloggers are all featuring the same brand (looking at you, Old Navy) or the same purse or the same hair product.  Whatever it is doesn't matter and we all do it, but it was getting to be too much.  All of this was making me feel totally burned out.

I wanted to fix that feeling - stat, so I really took some time to think about the issues.  I wanted to get back to the real reason I started blogging.  I hated my job.  I loved shopping and fashion and pretty things.  I needed a hobby.  Ta-da:  my blog.  I needed an outlet to share what my outside-of-work passions were and it was the perfect forum.  I was also asked pretty often where I got my dress, or my shirt, or my shoes, etc., so I thought my blog could be a helpful thing for girls to get ideas on where to shop for good deals (I find a ton of my stuff on eBay and sale sites, btw).  That's what it was and is all about; letting out a little creative energy and helping my friends/readers put together some classic outfits and find some good deals.  Keeping that mind-set is key.  It's not about how much commission I get off of each post or how many brands want to collab with me and I don't want to it ever feel like that to the readers.  For example, about two weeks ago, I said no to a collab because the brand (which I love) didn't want to pay my fee.  Wtf?  I'm still mad at myself about that.

Another thing for me to keep in mind is how amazing my blog has been for networking.  I'm pretty certain that I wouldn't have met any new people in DC (besides at work) if it hadn't been for my blog.  It definitely wasn't started for that reason, but it's been a major benefit.  I have met some awesome girls solely because of my blog and I'm so grateful for that.

Focus going forward:  I'm not going to make myself post every day if I don't want to.  I am only going to post if it's something I'm really excited about or motivated to do.  I'm still going to stay consistent, though.  I won't be gone for a week or anything like that..maybe during Christmas..still tentative on that ;)  I'm also going to try and keep my eye on the prize which is creating classic, timeless outfits out of mostly-affordable pieces that can be used over and over.  I think investing in the right items is important, though..so it's not all going to be Gap and F21.  So, yea, maybe you'll see the same jeans over and over this fall and maybe the same coat and bag will pop-up every other post, but it's real.

Whew--I hope I didn't lose you.  I also hope that wasn't too depressing or that I sound dramatic.  Blogging should never be dramatic.  I also hope you'll keep following along.  I feel much better now that I've gotten that all out in the open and can't wait to get back to what it's all about.

FRIDAY READS

picture via SoS

It's offically fashion week in NY, ladies.  Above is one of my favorite looks from fashion weeks past.  Oh and not to mention one of my most fave bloggers ever.  So, on to the reads:

H&M is coming out with a makeup line..very interesting.

Umm have y'all heard of Matt Bellassai?  Omg stop what you're doing now and watch some of his videos.  I was cracking up.

Not a huge Kohl's or LC fan, but she had a pretty good show this past week and a great turnout as well.

Another great find from C&C.  Life lessons you're not taught in school.

This is next on my to-buy list.  It's the perfect piece for fall, am I right?

FACTORY || MERCANTILE

Have they changed their name yet?  Factory?  Mercantile?  Whatever. They're killing it.  The other day they had 50% off everything and I completely broke my "Save It" challenge.  Below was everything in my shopping cart (disclaimer:  I didn't buy it all). I mean..all fall stuff, all 50%.  I really should have bought the down jacket when it was less than $100.  That wasn't smart of me.  I also hesitated on the blazers..when they were less than $90.  That was flat out stupid.  Nothing has come in the mail yet, so I will report back on fit/fabric/etc. when I've had time to assess it all.

OFF THE CUSP

top (sold out, similar here & here) // jeans (old, similar) // shoes (old, similar) // bag (sold out, similar here & here) // bracelet // watch

Have to give a shout-out to my fellow blogger/friend, Jenn, for the inspiration behind this top.  She bought hers at a local boutique here and I came across this one (almost exact) at F21.  It's the perfect balance of feminine & boho.  Not too much of each.
